Child & Adolescent Assessments

Clinical assessments for children are in-depth evaluations that identify developmental, emotional, or behavioural challenges

An assessment may be crucial for tailoring interventions, supporting access to NDIS funding, and working effectively with schools and teachers to create the best learning environment.

      ASD assessment

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by difficulties in communication, social interactions and restricted or repetitive patterns of behaviour ranging from mild to severe. Symptoms are often evident from early childhood, but may not be recognised until later when social demands become greater.

Early assessment, diagnosis and treatment provide the best outcomes for children with ASD – if you have concerns, it is important to have your child assessed.

      Autism assessment (ASD) includes:

      • Autism Diagnostic Observation Assessment (ADOS-2)
      • Autism diagnostic interviews with parents or carers (ADI-R) Adaptive behaviour assessment & Cognitive assessment (if appropriate).

The complete assessment process involves up to 10 hours of interviews, observations, testing, scoring, interpretation and report writing.

      ADHD assessment

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by difficulties with concentration, attention and impulse control. Even though they attempt to focus on their work, children with ADHD are easily distracted and can have trouble keeping up in class and maintaining friendships.

Left untreated, ADHD can have a negative impact on a person’s family, social, school or work life. Dr Amita Sarkar uses gold-standard assessment tools, including Conners 3, to diagnose ADHD.

      Cognitive assessment (IQ tests)

IQ tests determine a child’s/adult’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses. They can help examine intellectual difficulty or disability; identify intellectual giftedness; diagnose specific learning disorders; and investigate why your child has ongoing academic difficulties despite school intervention. The results of this assessment help parents and teachers support the child and ensure their learning needs are met.

      Educational Assessments

      Educational assessments

Educational assessments are useful in measuring a child’s academic skills in reading, comprehension, mathematics and spelling. An educational assessment can help identify particular academic or cognitive weaknesses that may indicate a specific learning disorder distinct from overall intellectual ability.

Having a diagnosed learning disorder from a Clinical Psychologist can help school staff provide an individualised education plan for your child.

      Behavioural assessments

Behavioural assessments help determine whether your child displays behaviours that are more difficult and challenging than their peers. Useful in diagnosing disorders such as ADHD, conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder, behavioural assessment is the first step towards intervention.

Behavioural concerns that may lead to assessment include:

      • Hyperactivity
      • Impulsivity
      • Inattention
      • Aggression
      • Defiance
      • Difficulties with peer relations.

If your child is experiencing any of these behaviours, reach out to Sarkar Mental Health today.
